There was a whole lot of reader interest from the new Powerbeats Guru, which are the first truly wireless earbuds coming from Apple’s Beats brand. Today, Apple announced that the Powerbeats Pro will go up for preorder on May 3rd in 7 AM PT (10 AM ET) and hit retail stores beginning on May 10th. That’s only for black, however. The earbuds price $249.95.
The Powerbeats Pro resembles the company wireless Powerbeats earphones, but they’ve been re-engineered for improved comfort. Beats says they could hit up to nine hours of continuous battery life — more than AirPods. And they include Apple’s H1 chip for hands-free”Hey Siri” controls at any time. The earbuds feature controls. Which are a little easier to use than tap gestures when exercising and are sweat and water resistant.
It is a little strange that the white Powerbeats Pro aren’t prepared for launching; at making new colors before Beats has never really struggled. In actuality, before these earbuds came along, the company made a habit of refreshing its headphones in various hues when there were no new products ready to reveal.
If you have always wanted black AirPods, well, these are not quite that. But depending on your needs, they might prove. Based on my time with them, I believe we’ll discover that the Powerbeats Guru is superior to AirPods in some regards — such as battery life and sound quality — and worse in others such as portability and convenience. (There’s no wireless charging.) Vlad will be getting his hands shortly for the review treatment, so stay tuned.
